What began four years ago as a strategic collaboration that stretched across some 7,200 miles recently became a world-class reality with the opening of Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital, in Shenzhen, China. The ultramodern, 1,100-bed medical center stands as testimony to the shared vision of Cedars-Sinai and Taikang Healthcare to create a standard-setting facility that delivers high-quality, patient-centered care to millions—while fostering international cooperation that benefits people globally.
Taikang Healthcare, a subsidiary of Taikang Insurance Group, is a leading private healthcare investment development and management organization that operates more than 250 healthcare facilities throughout China.
Members of Cedars-Sinai’s International team, which played an integral role in establishing and overseeing this strategic collaboration, attended the hospital’s opening ceremony this past August.
Heitham Hassoun, MD, chief executive of Cedars-Sinai International, spoke at the event.
“Congratulations on the grand opening of Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital. The collaboration between Cedars-Sinai and Taikang Healthcare has been immensely rewarding,” he said.
Adding, “We are proud to have contributed to the development of this esteemed institution, which is a testament to the dedication and hard work of both our teams. I am confident that our partnership will continue to thrive for many years to come.”
Built in one of China’s largest and fastest-growing cities, Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital’s priority specialties include gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, sports medicine and urology, along with specialized centers for cosmetic dermatology, dental medicine, health management and plastic surgery.
On the heels of the opening ceremony, Cedars-Sinai and Taikang Healthcare signed a new five-year strategic collaboration. Cedars-Sinai’s scope of work includes administration training, clinical observation, clinical service line development, education through joint conferences and symposia, healthcare operations and telehealth. The team also will continue sharing its expertise in quality, safety and personalized care.
Cedars-Sinai’s growing footprint in China includes a regional office in Shanghai, a strategic collaboration established in 2023 with Tsinghua University, often called the “MIT of China,” and its subsidiary, Tsinghua Medicine, an integrated system of medicine, education and research. Cedars-Sinai’s collaborative role includes serving as an international destination for Tsinghua University medical students pursuing overseas training. The Cedars-Sinai International team also is focusing on advancing physician-scientist development within Tsinghua University-affiliated hospitals.
“Cedars-Sinai’s current priories in China are to strengthen key partnerships with organizations such as Taikang Healthcare and Tsinghua University. These collaborations exemplify our commitment to actively supporting the development of China’s private and public healthcare sectors,” said Yawei Kong, managing director of Asia Global Services.
Looking ahead, Cedars-Sinai will stay true to its core commitment of increasing access to world-class care globally.
