Respiratory Gating and Motion Management

Overview

Sometimes tumors move during involuntary body movements, such as when a person breathes in and out. Respiratory gating and motion management is a type of radiation technology that senses and accounts for motion during radiation therapy. Doctors are then able to target tumors during specific times.

Respiratory gating and motion management technology minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissue. It is sometimes used in combination with other radiation treatments.

Respiratory gating is a painless, nonsurgical procedure. Depending on the type of cancer you have, and the radiation therapy you undergo, sessions may occur daily for up to six weeks.

You can go home and resume your normal daily activities after each session.

There are no side effects with respiratory gating.
